A study by environmental scientists has proposed a solution to the ongoing conflict between Egypt, Ethiopia, and Sudan over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam on the Nile River. Ethiopia is building a nearly $5 billion dam to provide electricity to its population, but Egypt is concerned it will cause water scarcity and impact its economy. The study shows how each country can benefit from the dam through cooperation. As a scenario benefiting one nation will negatively impact the others. The authors used AI to create optimized solutions for the dam’s operation, considering the impact of climate change on Nile basin hydrology. The study has been published in Nature Climate Change and will be used to inform ongoing negotiations involving the African Union, the US government, and the World Bank. However, the challenge is to get the nations to accept and adopt a compromise solution.
