Researchers examined data from over 35,000 individuals with European and African ancestry, revealing 40 candidate genes associated with coronary artery calcification. Notably, eight of these genes were previously unconnected to calcification, and five were novel for coronary artery disease. Some of these genes also play roles in cholesterol metabolism and inflammation, suggesting potential therapeutic targets for heart health. Further research is needed, but this study marks progress in understanding the genetics of heart disease.

A Novel Authentication Technique for β-Sitosterol Detection in Edible Oils
A new methodology developed by researchers at Zhejiang University could transform authentication processes in the food sector. The method, which was published in the journal Food Quality and Safety on 23 August 2023, is designed to scrutinize the levels of β-sitosterol present in edible oils. The researchers focused on virgin camellia oil (VCO) and virgin […]
Erucic acid: From waste to wonder with novel surfactants
Erucic acid is a byproduct of grease processing that is often wasted. However, new research has shown that it can be used to develop novel surfactants that have a wide range of potential applications. One such surfactant is adamantyl trimethylammonium erucate (AdEr). AdEr has been shown to have a lower critical micelle concentration (CMC) and […]
New method to Synthesize Nanosilica from Agricultural Waste Filtration
Researchers have developed a new way to synthesize spherical nanosilica materials from agricultural wastes such as bagasse and rice husk ashes. This nanosilica material is highly effective at removing methylene blue, a toxic dye, from water. The new method is much simpler and more cost effective than traditional methods for synthesizing nanosilica. It also uses […]
