Quest for ageing Shift
Since times immemorial, human beings have explored various domains spanning from cosmetics to surgical intervention to keep ageing at bay.
Ageing alters the structural framework; apart from being a precursor to various pathologies such as diabetes, cancer, metabolic syndrome and neurological degeneration to name a few. Ayurveda, “the science of herbs” has always advocated, slowing of this complex phenomenon by proper diet along with exercise and lifestyle modification.
Similarly, theory pertaining to ageing reversal via diet-induced cellular metabolism has been doing rounds in the scientific community. “The cure from within” hypothesis of ageing has gathered tremendous applaud, due to advancement in the scientific arena to vocalize the same.
Hallmarks of Ageing
Ageing research has made significant achievements by identification of gene targets intricated to bestow long and healthy life. Thereby, efforts are directed to diminish the early signs of external ageing.
Ageing is a multifaceted process occurring due to both intrinsic and extrinsic factors, thereby affecting all spheres of cellular dynamics. Diet or calorie restriction mediated changes in cellular dynamics, are the outcome of the underlying concept of” We are what we eat”.
Research highlights that; reduced calorie intake can delay ageing associated repercussions in rat models. Calorie restriction can significantly tune genes associated with inflammation, immunity, and metabolism towards gradual and healthy ageing. Professors at the Chinese academy of sciences showed interesting results with mice, subjected to diet restriction within periods of 18 to 27 months. Genetic expression profiles of various cell types’ specific immune modulators of calorie-restricted mice were on par with young counterparts. Moreover, 50% of ageing onset cellular changes were alleviated by dietary restriction in comparison with a normal diet.
High-throughput screening techniques have shown positive impacts of calorie restriction, on ageing associated T cell accumulation and proliferative defects. Furthermore, a decrease in the overall cytokine profile was also evident. Transcription factor-mediated gene switching of ageing associated genes are new highlights of scientific exploration.

The Scientific revolution has unimaginably transformed our understanding at single-cell levels. Hence, it can be rightly concluded that cell-specific secretome analysis can highlight the molecular interplay during the onset and maintenance of the ageing state. Thereby, shifting the emphasis from drug derived intervention to calorie intake bottomed lifestyle modification for ageing reversal.
