How low temperature lipid chain transition regulates the skin barrier?

According to some studies, a subset of skin barrier lipids changes its arrangement from tight to loose and back depending on the temperature and hydration levels. This may help the skin adapt to different conditions and signals. The lipid chain length and unsaturation also affect the transition temperature.
