Reported Speech – English editing.

In reports and stories it is often necessary to tell the reader what someone has said. If the words are quoted exactly as spoken, it is Direct speech. In writing this is shown by the use of punctuation. In reported speech the actual words are not quoted, but are usually summed up. For example:
1.Both students and lecturers said that they felt that lectures gave an opportunity for personal contact.
2.PC Clifford would have welcomed the tea, but said that he must get back to the scene of the tragedy.
